The Buy Box — now called the Featured Offer by Amazon — is the "Buy" button on a product page. When several sellers list the same item, only one sits behind that button. You lose it on total price, delivery speed, stock availability and post-purchase experience. As of July 2026, Amazon began removing the seller-level eligibility step.

For a brand selling on marketplaces, this stopped being a sales-team topic. Whoever holds the Buy Box on your own product sets the price the shopper sees, the delivery date they expect and the experience they associate with your brand — even when that party isn't you.

What the Buy Box is and why it concentrates sales

On a marketplace product page, the same item can carry dozens of offers. The platform doesn't weight them equally: it picks one and puts it behind the main buy button. The rest sit under "other sellers", a link most shoppers never open.

Amazon is explicit about this. On its official Featured Offer page, published on 10 April 2026, the company treats "Buy Box" as informal legacy wording and uses "Offer Display" as current terminology. The name changes; the mechanic doesn't.

On Mercado Libre — the dominant marketplace across Latin America — the equivalent structure is the catalogue. Per its seller documentation, creating a catalogue listing puts you in competition with everyone offering the same product for the featured seller slot, and the platform is blunt about the consequence: when someone clicks "Buy" on the product page, they are buying from you.

Which criteria decide who holds the Buy Box?

Amazon publishes four factors:

Factor — What Amazon says

Competitive pricing — Featured offers are commonly at or below the lowest priced alternatives. What counts is total price, shipping included

Shipping and delivery — Fast, free shipping raises the odds, and higher-certainty delivery dates carry weight

Order experience — Correct undamaged item, condition matching the listing, authentic and unexpired product

Inventory — "Your offer can't become featured if your item is out of stock"

One detail cuts against market belief: the same page states that self-fulfilment "can be just as effective as" Amazon's fulfilment network at improving your chances. FBA helps through speed and predictability, not as a formal requirement.

Mercado Libre's criteria are similar, with one important difference. The platform says the winning listing is the one offering the best purchase experience, weighing selling conditions (price, delivery, instalments), reputation and post-sale performance. And there's a hard rule: sellers with orange or red reputation may take part in the catalogue but cannot win — they're confined to the other-options section.

Why you lose the Buy Box even after matching the price

This is the most common question, and the answer is that price never decided it alone.

Mercado Libre documents three competition states, exposed in its API as winning, sharing_first_place and competing:

Winning — you offer better conditions and are the first purchase option

Sharing first place — conditions similar to another seller's; you're the first option for some shoppers

Losing or listed — the listing stays visible in search but cannot win

The second state explains most of the confusion. The platform is clear that there can be more than one winner, and that the featured seller changes with who is visiting: buyer location, loyalty tier and the search parameters used. If you offer same-day delivery in your city and the shopper is elsewhere, a competitor may win — with nothing having changed in your offer.

Amazon behaves the same way: one listing can show different featured offers depending on whether the customer is a Prime member and how far they are from the fulfilment centre.

The practical consequence is that "I lost the Buy Box" is almost never a single event. It's a partial, intermittent loss that only shows up under continuous measurement.

The 2026 change: Amazon is removing seller-level eligibility

In July 2026, Amazon's official announcements account posted on the Seller Central forums that it would begin removing seller eligibility requirements for the Featured Offer.

Until then the process had two steps: Amazon first determined which sellers were eligible based on performance criteria, then ranked offers from that pool. The company states the first step was "no longer delivering additional value to customers" and is being removed. The rollout is gradual, store by store, completing by the end of 2026, and requires no seller action.

Two readings matter for brand owners:

The door got wider. Sellers previously filtered out on performance now compete for the featured slot on your products. That includes unauthorised sellers and grey-market resale.

Selection criteria did not change. Amazon stresses it still evaluates competitive pricing, delivery speed and performance when choosing. Several sellers replied to the announcement flagging the apparent contradiction — removing performance as an entry gate while keeping it as a selection factor — and no clarification appears in the visible replies.

In practice the filter stopped being a prior barrier and became part of the ranking. For brands with an unauthorised-seller problem, the net effect tends to be more competition on their own product page.

What this has to do with brand protection

Here's the part sales teams treat as a pricing issue when it's really governance.

When an unauthorised seller holds the Buy Box on your product, three things happen at once. The price shoppers see is no longer the one you set, breaking your minimum advertised price policy across the authorised network. Delivery and after-sales become a third party's job, but complaints land with your support team. And the data you decide on — sell-out, share, elasticity — starts measuring someone else's operation.

Mercado Libre makes the link explicit. Its documentation states that products more exposed to counterfeiting may have their chances of ranking first in the catalogue temporarily limited, pending seller performance review. Suspicion of counterfeiting in a category affects the position of everyone selling there — including you.

If your problem is irregular sellers competing for the page, the answer isn't repricing. It's identifying and removing the unauthorised seller, with proof of ownership through each platform's correct complaint channel.

How to measure whether you're losing the Buy Box

You can't manage what you don't measure, and manual sampling fails when the winner changes per shopper.

On Amazon. The Manage All Inventory page shows in the price and shipping column whether your item is the featured offer. The Pricing Opportunities tab, inside Pricing Health, lists offers not eligible to become featured — where price-too-high, price-too-low and out-of-stock cases surface.

On Mercado Libre. The catalogue listing detail includes a competition table comparing your conditions against the best competitor. Through the competition API, the visit_share field indicates your listing's visibility level — which lets you track partial loss, not just the binary won/lost.

Chase the time series, not the snapshot. Two questions resolve most cases: what percentage of the time you held the featured slot last month, and who took it when you lost. The second separates legitimate competition from a channel problem.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need FBA to win the Buy Box?

No. Amazon's official page states that self-fulfilment can be just as effective as Amazon's fulfilment network at improving your chances. What counts is the outcome — speed, date certainty and delivery consistency — not the logistics model itself.

Does lowering the price guarantee the Buy Box?

No, and it can backfire. Amazon lists "price too low" as a reason for ineligibility, saying it may flag a suspected pricing error to protect sellers from listings published by mistake. Price is the most visible factor, not the only one.

Why does no one appear in the buy button sometimes?

When no offer is eligible, Amazon shows "See options" instead of a featured offer. The most common reasons are out-of-stock and price outside the accepted range.

Does the 2026 eligibility removal hurt me?

It depends who you are on the page. If the performance filter used to block you, you now compete. If you're the brand dealing with irregular sellers, expect more competition on your own product page — because the filter that screened part of those sellers no longer exists as a prior step.

How do I know who is winning the Buy Box on my products?

Amazon and Mercado Libre both show the direct competitor in pricing tools and the competition table. For a large catalogue across several products and platforms, that requires automated monitoring — manual checking can't keep up with a contest that changes by shopper and by hour.

If unauthorised sellers are behind your Buy Box loss, the problem is channel control, not pricing. See how Buy Box Protection works, or talk to us to size up your case.
